I have debated posting this since, hmmmm, about 6:15 last night. The content is not "bad", but the opportunities for juvenile poop references are abundant, and I will not be able to resist. So, I suppose this is a content warning...although the subject is a serious one :)
Apparently, the state of New York is full of, well, crap. Literally. (Side note: This is what happens when you try to cram all those people into one city...eventually, the state is going to get "full"). SO, the state of New York has contracted with a company out of Texas to treat their poop. New York flushes the state toilet, and presto!, the poo eventually hits the fan in Alabama. Texas obviously does not want to keep the, um, spoils for themselves.
After the doo flows into Alabama (by rail and by barge), your friendly local farmer can sign up to get a fresh batch of New York dookie for free. The farmer can then spread it on their land to fertilize the soil. Fertilize the soil....grow bigger & better crops....to sell to New York....may the circle, be unbroken....
All of this is very informative, but exactly what does it have to "doo" with my father-in-law? He and my mother-in-law, along with their neighbors, have been on the receiving end of this pipeline. A local land owner has been spreading the free poop on his land which is close to my in-laws. Treated or not, it still smells like poo. In this hot Alabama weather, one can only imagine the stench this creates. Not to mention the flies...all of which Mr. Britnell explains to a reporter from WAFF (posted above). Yes, that is my famous father-in-law!
My husband and I found out about the dumping a few weeks ago. Nothing more was discussed until last night. We were on our way to a "Preparing for Parenthood" class (I know, I know...but, this is my first baby!), and Jason says that the poo was spread again. His father walked outside and got pretty nauseated by the smell. Plans are in the works for a visit to a council meeting, and, if that fails, I am hearing the rumblings of an all out protest on the courthouse. Which, from the viewpoint of someone that missed the great sit-ins/protests of the 60s, would be so cool :)
This post will have to fall under the heading of "to be continued..." (okay, okay...my husband just called and asked "exactly what have you done today?" ...grrr), but I will leave you with some points to ponder. One: to New York...don't dump it on Alabama. We are not your toilet. Two: to the friendly local Alabama farmer...wow, you fell for it?! Come on! This is human feces...treated or not, there is SOMETHING in it! Think of all the medications people ingest...it is coming out somewhere! Three: again, to New York..cheese. Eat lots and lots of cheese. And, that should just about plug up any loose ends :)

A friend and I were just talking about this at the end of the school year. I had commented on the awful smell as we passed through the area on the school buses going to Decatur on a field trip. I was horrified when she told me of the "new and improved" fertilizer. To think someone would even want to handle that nasty stuff...that's just about thet only way to put it :(
The thought of it is pretty nasty..I have yet to smell it (thank goodness). You know that stuff has to be crawling with SOMETHING!
OMG...Sooooo funny. Well, not to your father-in-law, of course. But you are a great story teller and the story was hilarious. We, luckily very rarely, get something of the same situation here were I live as there is a landfill some miles from us. With the landfill the wind has to be in just the right direction for it to bother us, but you can sure tell when you are passing it driving down the highway. Your father-in-law has my sympathy.
We visited Newburg yesterday. It is quite the olfactory experience. It literally smells like a septic tank. Not pleasant at all.
Awesome! Just in time for the fourth of July!
